Lucktastic

I worked on and led a team porting a native Android app, Lucktastic, to Unity3D for iOS. Lucktastic is a sweepstakes scratch-off game with real cash prizes. The iOS version was not a straight port, but also a major improvement feature-wise and visually. It supported more than two dozen 3rd party plugins for advertising and analytics. Cooperating with the backend team was a major part of my job as well, since much of Lucktastic’s gameplay was driven by an AWS API.

A spotlight on Lucktastic.

API Integration

Lucktastic’s gameplay is heavily driven by a back-end API, requiring a robust knowledge of networking and routing. I often served as a go-between for the front-end and back-end teams, since I could faithfully communicate the requirements of the tasks we were collaborating on.

Data Driven Interfaces

Once feature parity was reached with the older Android version of Lucktastic, I worked with the back-end team to improve how data was sent and consumed by the front-end. I authored the flexible and interactive interfaces that rendered data sent from the back-end. I prioritized future proofing our platform, so a dynamic range of content could be served through our app without requiring an update to the App Store.

3rd Party Plugin Support

In addition to our own dynamic content, Lucktastic supported dozens of 3rd party plugins for serving advertisements and tracking analytics. Making all these plugins play nice together was a huge responsibility, and we were constantly pulling out old plugins and adding new ones to meet the demands of our sales team.

When it came time to port our improved iOS version back to Android, we creating a custom pipeline for building Lucktastic. This was required due to the lack of native multiDEX support in Unity3D at the time, since we far surpassed 64k method limit on Android. Eventually, we neatly wrapped this custom build process into Unity’s Cloud Build.

I Can Talk

I love the opportunity to get on camera and talk about the products I’ve worked on. Here I am, talking about how users can spend the points they earn in Lucktastic.

Wow, handsome!

Unity loved the way in which we customized their Cloud Build pipeline, so they visited us to learn more. In the process, I was interviewed for one of their promotional videos.

I’m also featured in the landing page for Unity Cloud build, both as a quote and in their promotional video.
